UNICEF estima que al menos 2,7 millones de niños viven en instituciones en todo el mundo. En Colombia según el Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar (ICBF) 261.707 niños se encuentran institucionalizados. Algunas causas frecuentes son: maltrato infantil, abandono, negligencia y exposición a sustancias psicoactivas. “La Casa de la Madre y el Niño” es una fundación privada sin ánimo de lucro, que desde 1942 orienta, protege, atiende y cuida niños y niñas en las condiciones antes mencionadas. El servicio de Musicoterapia inicia en la institución en el año 2015, mostrando resultados favorables, lo que ha permitido ampliar la cobertura, pasando de 8 horas mensuales de atención en 2015 a 80 horas en la actualidad, estableciéndose tres programas de intervención a saber: Musicoterapia para el desarrollo, Acompañamiento del Sueño y Cuidado al Cuidador. Trabajando en pro del bienestar y desarrollo integral de los niños y niñas como también el de sus cuidadores.
Rol del musicoterapeuta:
Es importante mencionar que el rol de los profesionales en la institución ha venido transformándose con el paso del tiempo. Inicialmente, el trabajo se enfoca básicamente en la actividad musicoterapéutica, con el paso del tiempo y a medida que el servicio ha ido creciendo, los musicoterapeutas comenzaron a desarrollar un papel mucho más importante, donde las funciones varían constantemente, traspasando el espacio de la sesión de musicoterapia, desarrollando diagnósticos (musicoterapéuticos) para apoyar otras áreas y a otros profesionales de la institución, igualmente cumplen con funciones recreativas, de manejo comportamental, aprovechamiento del tiempo libre, entre otras; todo esto siempre priorizado por las necesidades que los niños, niñas y la institución presentan.

"La Casa de la Madre y el Niño" is a non-profit private foundation, which since 1942 has been guiding, protecting, and caring for children under the aforementioned conditions. The Music Therapy service started in the institution in 2015, showing favorable results, which has allowed expanding the coverage, from 8 hours per month of care in 2015 to 80 hours at present, establishing three intervention programs known as: Music therapy for development, Accompaniment of the Dream and Care for the Caregiver. Working for the welfare and integral development of children as well as their caregivers.
Role of the music therapist:
It is important to mention that the role of professionals in the institution has been changing over time. Initially, the work focused basically on the music therapy activity, with the passage of time and as the service has grown, the music therapists began to develop a much more important role, where the functions vary constantly, going beyond the session space of music therapy, developing diagnostics (music therapy) to support other areas and other professionals of the institution, they also fulfill recreational functions, behavioral management, use of free time, among others; all of this is always prioritized by the needs that children and the institution present.
